WASHINGTON — As community colleges take center stage today at a White House summit, a group representing for-profit colleges is taking aim at community colleges. In a report released Monday, a marketing firm working for the Coalition for Educational Success, an advocacy group for several privately held for-profit companies, argues that community colleges engage in “unsavory recruitment practices” and offer students “poorer-than-expected academic quality, course availability, class scheduling, job placement and personal attention.” The report crystallizes arguments from the for-profit sector that community colleges — perceived as the Obama administration’s preferred set of institutions to offer work force training — are ill-equipped to serve the students they already enroll and would struggle in taking on larger enrollments.
WASHINGTON (Reuters) – President Barack Obama on Tuesday accused Republicans of wanting to slash education spending and said this would “unilaterally” disarm the country as it competes with emerging powerhouses China and India. Ramping up his pre-election rhetoric, Obama said Republicans would jeopardize long-term U.S. prosperity to finance tax cuts for the rich, and pay for this with steep cuts in spending on schools and colleges
WASHINGTON – President Barack Obama says Republicans sharpening their budget ax would damage the American economy by taking a big whack at education spending. Opening a meeting of the President’s Economic Recovery Advisory Board on Monday, Obama said he agrees with the GOP that America’s fiscal situation is “untenable,” but its plans would force a 20 percent cut in education funding. He said that “just doesn’t make sense” at a time when the economy’s struggling and other countries are becoming fiercer competitors
NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J. (AP) — Rutgers University has planned a silent vigil to remember a student who committed suicide after his sexual encounter was secretly streamed online
NEW YORK – President Barack Obama’s call for a longer school day and year for America’s kids echoes a similar call he made a year ago to little effect, illustrating just how deeply entrenched the traditional school calendar is and how little power the federal government has to change it. Education reformers have long called for U.S
NEWARK, New Jersey (AP) — New Jersey has already thrown enough money at its largest school district to make it among the nation’s best-funded, yet it remains in the pits. Can a $100 million gift from the founder of Facebook really turn it around? The money hasn’t even arrived, but it’s already creating a buzz in Newark, where three out of five third-graders can’t read and write at their grade level
PHILADELPHIA – President Barack Obama, in a message Tuesday to America’s students, urged them to ignore bullies and treat each other with kindness and respect, saying part of the beauty of life “lies in its diversity.” Obama acknowledged that school is tough and that it can be made even tougher by the presence of classroom bullies who make fun of students and try to make those who are different from them feel bad. He said students should ignore the bulliers and celebrate the differences among them. “What I want all of you, if you do take away one thing from my speech, I want you to take away the notion that life is precious, and part of what makes it so wonderful is its diversity,” Obama said from a Philadelphia school during his second back-to-school address.
WASHINGTON – President Barack Obama is recognizing the contributions of historically black colleges and universities to the nation’s education system and calling for their continued support. Obama says strengthening the country’s 105 federally recognized historically black colleges and universities is a job for the entire federal government and key to his goal of increasing college graduation rates. Obama made the remarks Monday to a White House reception of leaders of the institutions
LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – Jefferson Thomas, who as a teenager was among nine black students to integrate a Little Rock high school in the nation’s first major battle over school segregation, has died.
