TORRANCE, Calif. – Officials say portable cooking equipment has exploded in a Southern California classroom, sending 10 high school students to the hospital. Officials told the Daily Breeze that four of the injured teens at North High School in Torrance were seriously hurt in the Friday afternoon blast.

CARLSBAD, Calif.
In a ruling that puts new restraints on get-tough “zero tolerance” discipline, the North Carolina Supreme Court ruled Friday that schools must provide strong reasons for denying alternative schooling or tutoring to students after they are suspended for misbehavior. The case was brought on behalf of two girls who were suspended for five months in 2008 after a brief fistfight at their high school in Beaufort County that involved no weapons or injuries. The suit did not question the district’s right to suspend them, but protested the additional, harsher step the district took, denying them access to the county’s alternative school for troubled students or help with study at home
Despite an increased understanding that kids learn differently, a majority of Americans still do not completely understand what conditions are related to learning disabilities, a new poll says. The report by the Tremaine Foundation, which supports programs in arts, environment and disabilities, is based on a telephone poll of 1,000 adults. The report says that 79% of parents and 80% of non-parents incorrectly associate mental retardation with a learning disorder.
